Who was the US businessman that went to the Orient to help Toyota and Nissan improve?

There was a US business man who tried to offer suggestions to the US car manufacturers like Ford and Chevrolet in the 40’s or 50’s and when they were not interested in his suggestions, he went to the Orient and helped Toyota and Nissan and look where they are now. Education even adapted his philosophies over the years. It is driving me nuts , I cannot remeber the names of either of the two men. Can someone help???
