my peugeot 406 starts up and goes off several times before running continously. what can be responsible?
Could this be injector related or ignition and electrical or air flow or fuel pump problem. Once it starts running normally it does not stop until the engine is put off again for about ten minutes or more.

Sounds like the throttle housing reqs cleaning out .
Also remove the stepper motor and remove all the carbon from the base of it.
Then you need to Reinitialise the Engine management .
This is how you do it on these models . Turn on the ignition do not start the engine . Put your Accelerater Pedal right down to the floor then release it this will then tell the Ecu its throttle parameter.
Then start the engine if the idle is ok then try loading all your Electrics up to see if the idle rises if so you should be ok.
could be a compression problem if your car has done a lot of miles, if it runs fine and ticks over nicely once started, i doubt its a fuel problem, if it smokes a lot while cold after start up this could indicate worn valve seats / piston rings , a compression test would rule this out.

Clogged fuel injector, bad alternator, malfunctioning carburetor. Take it in to the shop and have them run a computer diagnostic on it.
